Oblique Angle Crash Tests of Loaded Heavy Trucks Into an Instrumented Wall

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Two fully loaded (80,000 pounds nominal weight) tractor semi-trailer trucks were impacted into an instrumented wall at 55 miles per hour and an oblique angle of 15 degrees to the wall. This effort was conducted under two separate contracts, one under FHWA and the other NHTSA. The objective of the FHWA contract was to determine lateral impact forces in heavy vehicle collisions with an instrumented wall. The objectives of the NHTSA contract were to study heavy truck occupant kinematics and trauma outcomes. The reports covers results mostly from the NHTSA contract. The FHWA contract is still ongoing and the results will be presented in a separate report.

NHTSA ’ s Vehicle Compatibility Research Program

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is conducting a research program to investigate the crash compatibility of passenger cars, light trucks and vans (LTV’s) in vehicle-to-vehicle collisions. NHTSA has conducted a series of eight full-scale vehicle-to-vehicle crash tests to evaluate vehicle compatibility issues. Tests were conducted using four bullet vehicles representing ...

Heavy trucks, conspicuity treatment, and the decline of collision risk in darkness.

INTRODUCTION The influence of amendments to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 108, requiring conspicuity treatments on heavy tractors and trailers, was determined in analyses of the odds of fatal collisions in darkness. METHOD Comparisons were made between crashes in which conspicuity treatment was likely relevant, and those in which it was likely irrelevant. RESULTS Over 23year...

Experimental and numerical crashworthiness investigation of hybrid composite aluminum tubes under dynamic axial and oblique loadings

This research deals with axial and oblique impact crash tests on simple and hybrid composite tubes. Axial and oblique impact tests have been generated on simple and hybrid composite tubes with one, two and three layers. A drop test rig was used to conduct the experiments. Furthermore, in order to gain more detailed knowledge about the crash process, finite element simulations of the experim...

Oblique lateral impact biofidelity deflection corridors from Post Mortem Human Surrogates.

The objective of the study was to determine the thorax and abdomen deflection-time corridors in oblique side impacts. Data were analyzed from Post Mortem Human Surrogate (PMHS) sled tests, certain aspects of which were previously published. A modular and scalable anthropometry-specific segmented load-wall system was fixed to the platform of the sled. Region-specific forces were recorded from lo...

Comparison of Passenger Vehicle and Tmck Crash Rates on Toll Roads

Overall comparisons of crash rates based on mileage indicate that truck crash rates are lower than car crash rates, but that truck crashes are more severe. In 1978 the overall U.S. crash rate for cars was estimated at 8.2 accidents per million vehicle-miles of travel; for large trucks (including combinations) the rate was 4.7 per million vehicle-miles, and for combination trucks (e.g., tractor-...
